Nike said sales of footwear in North America—its largest market—fell 2% in the latest quarter. Photo: Benjamin Girette/Bloomberg NewsNike made a swift comeback earlier this month in the super-shoe fight when marathon runner Kelvin Kiptum set a world record while wearing a new iteration of the company’s Alphafly 3. But the sneaker maker is losing steam in other races. Competitors such as Hoka and On are gaining a foothold among runners and with people who are looking for something comfortable to wear to work or school. Adidas and New Balance are also making headway in the market for streetwear by bringing back old models in dozens of colorways, moves similar to those from Nike’s own playbook.

Photo: Benjamin Girette/Bloomberg NewsWASHINGTON—The Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday said it would drop its lawsuit against two cryptocurrency executives who oversaw $1.5 billion in sales of a digital coin known as XRP, in a move that boosts the industry’s battle against traditional regulation. The dismissal of civil claims against Brad Garlinghouse and Chris Larsen , who were sued for assisting Ripple Labs’s sales, will likely encourage wealthy crypto defendants to fight regulators in court. At the same time, the SEC’s withdrawal from the case preserves its resources for bigger lawsuits it has filed against crypto giants Coinbase and Binance.

Journal Editorial Report: Presidential talk continues about the Virginia governor. Image: Benjamin Girette/Bloomberg NewsConventional wisdom says that Virginia’s legislative elections in November could make or break Glenn Youngkin ’s presidential ambitions. Yet the stakes are much higher for Virginia residents. This election, in which all 140 seats in the bicameral General Assembly will be contested, may decide whether Virginia remains a haven for families and taxpayers or goes the route of failing states like Illinois.

Journal Editorial Report: Presidential talk continues about the Virginia governor. Image: Benjamin Girette/Bloomberg NewsThe first Republican presidential debate hits the stage in Milwaukee next week, and perhaps the moment will help one or more of the candidates break from the pack. It often does. But before the brawling begins, it’s not too soon to think about how to narrow the GOP field to give former President Trump a challenge that the party and the country deserve.
